Overview
The DM-LR60 uses an 80 GHz frequency-modulated continuous-wave radar to measure the distance to a liquid or solid surface without contact. The short wavelength gives a narrow 4° beam, which is what allows the transmitter to be mounted in a tank with agitators, heating coils and inlet streams without picking up a reflection from any of them.
Because the measurement is electromagnetic rather than acoustic, vapour, dust, foam and wind have far less effect than they do on an ultrasonic sensor. Setup is done over Bluetooth from a phone or over HART from the control system, and the empty and full calibration can be entered as distances rather than as percentages, which removes a common source of configuration error.
Key features
- 0-30 m range with ±3 mm accuracy
- 80 GHz FMCW, 4° beam angle
- Unaffected by vapour, dust and most foam
- 4-20 mA with HART 7 and Bluetooth configuration
- PTFE or PFA antenna for corrosive media
- Process temperature -40 to +150 °C, pressure -1 to 40 bar
Typical applications
- Wet wells, sumps and pump stations
- Fermentation and buffer tanks with foam
- Silo and hopper inventory for powders and pellets
- Chemical storage tanks with corrosive vapours
Mounting note
Keep the antenna clear of the tank wall by at least 100 mm and away from the inlet stream. A nozzle that protrudes more than its own diameter into the tank creates a false echo that no configuration can remove, so shorten the nozzle or use a flush antenna.
