Sensors for Water & Wastewater Treatment

Level, flow and pressure measurement in wet wells, aeration basins, filter galleries and distribution mains, built for humidity, fouling and remote sites.

Typical installed flow accuracy ±2%

Water treatment is a low-margin, high-availability business. Instruments sit in wet wells, on aeration basins and inside filter galleries, often without a technician within an hour's drive. The specification priority is therefore not accuracy but the ability to keep working unattended for years: sealed housings, fouling-resistant faces, and outputs that a SCADA system can trust.

Our water range covers submersible and non-contact level measurement for wet wells and reservoirs, clamp-on and electromagnetic flow meters for pumped and gravity mains, and pressure transmitters for filter differential and network monitoring. Battery-powered flow and level loggers are available for sites without a power supply.

For remote installations we supply IP68 junction boxes and gel-filled cables, and for sludge and grit we recommend non-contact radar rather than contact probes, because a coated probe changes its reading slowly and silently until a pump runs dry.

Application Reality

What actually goes wrong here

These are the failure modes we are called in to solve, and the specification change that addresses each one.

Fouling on contact probes

Grease, grit and biological growth coat a probe and shift the reading without any alarm. Non-contact radar avoids the problem entirely and needs no cleaning schedule.

Pump dry-run protection

A single level instrument used for both control and protection is a common cause of pump damage. An independent vibrating fork switch at the low level gives a hard interlock.

Buried and submerged cables

Standard cable jackets absorb water through the conductor strands. Gel-filled, IP68-rated assemblies are specified for wet wells and underground chambers.

Remote sites without power

District metering points frequently have no electrical supply. Battery-powered flow and pressure loggers with multi-year life avoid the cost of a new connection.

Flow measurement without shutdown

Cutting into a live main is rarely acceptable. Clamp-on ultrasonic meters install on the pipe exterior and can be removed for maintenance without interrupting supply.

Application Example

Wet well level, 12 pump stations

Situation

A regional utility was servicing blocked ultrasonic sensors at 12 pump stations roughly every eight weeks, and two stations had suffered dry-run pump damage in a single year.

What we changed

We replaced the ultrasonic units with 80 GHz radar sensors mounted on the existing brackets, and added an independent vibrating fork low-level switch wired directly into the pump interlock.

Result

Sensor call-outs fell from around 70 per year to 6, and no dry-run event was recorded over the following 18 months.

FAQ

Water Treatment instrumentation questions

Which level sensor suits a wet well with grease and rags?

Non-contact 80 GHz radar. Ultrasonic fails when foam or vapour interferes, and contact probes foul. Fit an independent low-level switch for pump protection rather than relying on the continuous transmitter.

Can I measure flow without cutting the pipe?

Yes, with clamp-on ultrasonic transducers. They need a clean pipe surface, a known wall thickness and a straight run, but they install without a shutdown and can be moved between locations.

Are your sensors rated for drinking water contact?

Selected wetted parts are certified to NSF/ANSI 61. State the application when you order, because the standard requires a specific material and finish combination.

What do you recommend for a site with no power?

A battery-powered flow or pressure logger with a multi-year battery and cellular or NB-IoT telemetry. It removes the cost of a new electrical connection and can be relocated if the network is reconfigured.

How do I protect instruments from lightning and surge?

Use shielded cable with the shield bonded at the panel, add a surge arrestor at the field end for exposed sites, and keep the cable route below the water line where possible. Most instrument failures at remote sites are surge damage, not sensor failure.
